My friend is going through this right now here in canada.2 bollards in front of stove and fire box 18 in from floor in order to get insurance after a $350 wett inspection.
Yes Canada's rule makes allot of sense i wish the us would adopt it
 
I don't store gasoline at all but I do work on motorcycles in the same room.
The code says a solid fuel burning appliance shall not be installed in any garage or any space where gasoline or other flammable vapors are present.

Not that it matters because I'm doing it anyway, but where are you seeing this? I'm not finding anything online that says anything other than needing to be inspected.

And many choose to do it anyway including myself. But be aware that it is very likely that insurance will deny a claim related to that stove if anything happens. I'm just giving you the proper info so you can make an informed decision
