A nice row of 4 more tiles in front of the hearth will get you there and look good too. How to do it? This is where you can be creative. If you don't want to take up carpet and lay tile permanently, you can lay the tile on a stiff backing. Then grout and edge with matching moulding. To meet code it has to be "permanent"; so nail it down. Others have reported using this setup only in winter and storing the tile tray away for summer.
