I bet Sycamore.
hard wood to split by hand. I have a couple rows of it.

I would think Sicky would be more of a rougher, stringier grain, no? This looks like a pretty smooth, clean split for it but who knows? Inside grain almost looks like a Poplar or lighter hardwood but he said it is heavy and stringy....

maybe the wood was beat-up like said earlier.

Sycamore does seem to have a more modeled look then the OPs pic.

Sycamore usually has a darker heart-wood....and the bark varies between brown, green, and white. The white you see in the pic is where the bark is gone.

Still hackberry.

I looked at the leaves, and looked online and I am convinced that it's hackberry. Tight, stringy white wood, perfect match for leaves and the owner described the tiny berries.
