So, after 15 years in the fall I replaced the fire bricks in our Enerzone wood stove. The old ones were cracking. Ended up using the coarse lighter weight ones instead of the smooth, heavier ones. Cut them with an angle grinder.
Here we are just a few months into burning season and the horizontals are crumbling on the surface. About a week ago I was cleaning the ash out from the firebox and felt something weird that didn't feel like cold coals. It was the surface of the bricks crumbling away.
Not sure if I just got a bad batch, a cheap brand of bricks or if I'm doing something wrong. The old bricks lasted for years and these ones are crumbling after just a few months. The wood I'm burning is ash (pretty much all you can get around here) and it's been stacked outside for 2 years. We always bring it in the house a few days before burning so it's definitely dry.

Do you recall what brand the bricks were?

Could be a bad batch. Usually SBI firebrick is decent quality.

I thought SBI (Osburn at least) used the kiln hardened bricks. The lightweight bricks definitely do not hold up especially if you are a person who does not take care loading up. Stay warm.

Some of the SBI stoves use pumice bricks. I don't recall which ones now.
