Have you discussed with a good certified sweep the option of tapping in a new thimble at least above the last bend? And possibly locating the point of the second bend (from the basement floor up)?

No, I haven't. And I'm not sure where to find a reliable sweep. I'd still have two bends to get through with a liner, if the first one is low enough before the ceiling.

Correct, but two bends are much better than 4. For a certified sweep in your area go to www.csia.org and type in your zip code. There should be many. You could cross-reference that list with local reviews on angies list, yelp, etc..

As efficiency increases, flue temps decrease. Your described offsets, exterior wall chimney and more than likely inability to get an insulated liner installed, all suggest potential performance issues.

There are other models, that have 6" flues that we make that may be more likely to perform much better based on your described scenario.

Can you elaborate? Which models and why? I was thinking bigger was better for this chimney.
