so what do you guys use to seal stove pipe joints? The cement sounds like it is too permanent; the silicone-based sealants are only good to 500F or so. When I have all the air intakes closed on my stove, I can still hear air whooshing though the stove pipe.
 
I used nothing to seal my stove pipe joints . . . just the required three screws to keep the pipe together. Normal draft should not allow anything out . . . with or without any additional sealant.
 
This is an unusual case though, where smoky smelling air is being drawn down to the cold basement stove.
