I have a 1984 Newmac model: wao/gao but it has no grate and only the one big door, no smaller lower door. I thought the gao meant coal and wao meant wood, thereby making this a dual source model?

It’s possible pieces have gone missing since 1984.

A WG 100 has 2 doors and is for wood/coal it is equipped with a shaker grate
A WB 100 1 door with no grate is wood only

As far as I know, without the shaker grate and ash pan, it is wood-only
The Unit I had was also plated AWO/GAO and had the shaker grate and ash pan
Used it as my main heating for 25 years 3 years ago upgraded it to a wood/propane furnace

Well, it seems that the rest of the unit can handle the added heat so I'll make a coal basket and see if the existing airflow will work.
