I used to get them in the base of the tee on the chimney for my oil furnace, before installing a cap. I think they'd perch atop the chimney to enjoy the free heat, get stoned on the fumes, and fall in.We got a "bird proof" cap when we had our chimney installed...every year we get at least one bird in the stove. Generally they're Grackles which are kinda big.
