Just ordered one of those endoscopes. I've wanted one for a while anyway for gun rifling inspection

We say that at work all the time, or "I got you a dirty diaper" meaning a bad job is coming, or "I'm sitting in a lot of squishy stuff" means current job is starting to turn for the bad.

I am totally going to have to start using the squishy stuff saying..... I work in industrial electrical/controls/service. I am up to my ears in squishy stuff on a daily basis. lol

Its snowing pretty good here and the winds tomorrow are going to pick up with temps dropping like a rock, we're gona be sitting in a lot of squishy stuff if the lights go out, might be coming out the sides and up the back.

That is truly amazing that it never caught fire.

oh but it did, what you see is the evidence. expanded creosote from the chimney fire

old brick chimney w/ glaze, new un insulated liner, eventually it caught fire.\ I've seen this many times and always check for insulation on thin walled liners during inspections for this (and other) reasons

Yea for us it would be more like they have an old system that you cant get parts for and is now down so a salse guy told them no problem we can update it...... 14 hours later we are still trying to get it working and looks like we need more parts that are not available till tomorrow..... So stuck in squishy stuff.... lol.

Or for example... 45 year old system old dc drive failed.... After checking everything out the motor is actually bad too.(May have been when tok the drive out) New drive sent in is way to big to fit in the enclosure that the old one fit and the motor cant be repaired.... again squishy chit up to my ears. lol

Stupid question, but is that liner a full liner to top? Or just stubbed into the old chimney tile? That's a lot of crap to just fall off the old chimney walls.
Yet another reason for insulating a liner.

Is this the same chimney that the handyman father found the bird nest in and told you All was good , than you found more nest down lower ? So the guy you called after hearing all these stories didn’t check for an intact liner ? How did it get from a slammer to having a full liner ? Am i confusing several posts That all had smoke smell

It is a full liner to the top with a screenless cap.

Yes this is the same liner with bird nest material that we cleared. We either missed some nest, or that bird returned in the two months time after we originally cleaned it. I told the sweep all of this, but he performed a cleaning of the creosote on the top of the stove. He said it may have been installed originally without a liner and run for a while that way before they installed the full pipe. Or, that creosote was from the original fireplace that was never cleaned prior to installing the insert. Whatever the situation, the creosote fell from the chimney down to the stove.

I just ordered a Bluetooth endoscope that will be here Friday. At that time, I'll run it up the liner.

Haven't had a chance to light a fire. Tomorrow night I'll be able to try it out.

Ordered this one. 16' will be get to the top of my chimney and it has attachments. Used Amazon rewards points and it only cost me $12!

If anyone's not aware, wifi endoscopes that work pretty well are less than $50 on amazon now, less than $20 on ebay. I got one that is twice as long as my flue for $35.

The tool I got is probably not rugged enough to last long for a chimney sweep, but it will probably last me until I lose it.

@jetsam do you fasten your scope to anything more ridged for sending it up your chimney? The one I ordered is supposed to be semi ridged, but if it is too flexible I plan on attaching it to a fish tape or something probably

I'd probably pick up a short piece of 14 gauge wire. Romex will be plenty stiff.
