Well, Da Bears are losing AGAIN so I'll just post. The manual say to check the cats at least 3 times a year (season). Well, yeah, I've been burning white oak and hickory since late Oct and thought I should check them after the first of the year. SUPRISE!!! Last night I noticed a smoke smell and the fire was burning kinda weird. Opened the bypass and everything seemed fine. This AM shoveled out the firebox and was cool enough to work on it. Dreaded this as the manual and drawings made it look like major surgery. First thing, after messing around with the cotter pin...just cut it off with a Dreml! New cotter pins are 6 for $.85 at Menard's. After that it went suprisingly easy. The cats were completely covered so just brushed them off with soft brush, vac'd out the firebox and everything slid back together. Not nearly as big a deal as I feared. Guess I won't wait so long and do this again in 4 or 5 weeks

Good to hear that it was fairly quick to fix, but a pita to have to do this when the temps are so low outside.

It was 4Fat 1 AM but about 20 or so this morning when I did it. Don't heat the house with it, just burn tree service wood:). Stove is running now and is beautiful. Surprising you don't notice the decline in burn over time. BTW, I see the Bears are playing the Seahawks...another loss coming up. It was a pitiful game today.
