6 yrs now with a pellet boiler and bulk delivery. I'm noticing the past two yrs that the pellets delivered to the boiler (via 15 ft auger) have more and more fines compared to the first part of winter. This is a major problem for my Kedel boiler which hates fines and tends to go out when in excess. These are a premium softwod pellet made by Green Mtn Pellets in southern Vt. My storage bin is located in an adjoining unheated basement. I'm guessing this is a common problem with bulk pellets. Any others seeing pellet degradation when stored in bulk and become 2-3 months old? I'm going to try to talk to Green Mtn about it... but my guess is that they will tell me its MY PROBLEM. -Dan-

I don't think that the pellets are degrading in storage. The fines are just settling in the hopper as the pellets are being used. It is possible that the last 2 years have had more fines than previous years and this is why you are noticing it more.

You could take a piece of perforated sheet metal and cut a portion of the bottom of the auger tube out and wrap it with the perforated sheet metal to screen out some of the fines as the pellets travel across it.
