Buddy straight gassed my saw- Replace piston?

A while ago I posted about my friend borrowing my saw and killing it. Well,upon further review, it does look like it had straight gas in it - the piston is all scratched up. I was looking online at a new piston for it (Husky 142), and was wondering if I could just replace the piston, or do I need to replace the cylinder,also. I'm pretty sure I should do both, but I'm just wondering what you guys think. Any suggestions??

Sometimes you can save a cylinder by removing aluminum transfer with muriatic acid (HCl). Sometimes the cylinder is too far gone and it also needs to be replaced. Pictures?

You also may need to replace friend or whack him with scored piston.

Im at work now, and my saw is at home. I can post some pics later. Its hard to say how bad its scratched up, i guess its a relative term to say-"not that bad" , or "pretty bad". The piston and cylinder are about $35 each @ Baileys online.

Check your bearings on the crank too. Without lube it's hard to know what happened.

Is this the story of the buddy who was going to pay you $100 toward repair or replacement of your saw and you were going to get a new one and fix up the "ruined" one and give it to him?

Put the piston on a string and make him wear it around his neck. :red:


If you are willing to spend the time you can often save the cylinder, using muratic acid and fine sandpaper you can remove aluminum transfer. If the cylinder is really bad has deep scratches, or you are in hurry you may need to replace it.

I was able to save both cylinders on my Husky 350 and 36.
You can see the pic of the piston of the 350 is pretty bad.

Yes - well, close , Kenster. I got the new saw(he kicked in $100)- I fixed HIS old saw(that he wanted to give to me b/c he felt bad,but it didnt work) and gave it back to him, and now I'll fix the saw he ruined and then I'll have that one ,also. Wow,that was a long sentance. ;-P Oh-and my piston doesnt look QUITE that bad,I dont think. I guess the saw that came off of was NOT RUNNING anymore,huh?

I thought that was the story but was too lazy to go back and try to find the original thread. So, your new saw is the MS290? Sweet! Hopefully, you can get your Huskey fixed up for a backup.

With a new OEM cylinder being only $35, I wouldn't bother trying to clean it up... JMHO...

Looks like strait gas to me... Or a really really bad air leak....

For the price of the sand paper and acid and your time I would just pick up the piston and cylinder...

I think Wood Fan At Tic explained the story once . . . if memory serves me correctly his ex- needed a place to stay and his wife actually gets along well enough with her and apparently Wood gets along well enough so the ex- is still staying with them . . . my own opinion . . . it's definitely different, but says something about how some people are able to move on and not be vindictive to each other when the marriage does not work out.
