Have you considered getting a princess Ultra instead of the Parlor? I would suspect it has much greater clearance requirements on the side. The Ultra is more attractive in my opinion and would fit the alcove better. Just a thought.

Man I remember them days.. it's really awesome if your wife decides that you should start the instal in the dead of winter, rather than waiting until spring..

Wife liked the parlor better because of the legs.. and I've actually already bought it and it's waiting on install. But besides that, per the manual, all three versions of the princess have the same clearances.

Ok,cool. Seems like the parlor would have greater clearances since it doesn't have the side shields like the ultra.

Actually, you can buy side shields for the Parlor, however I think they do come standard on the Ultra.

Ok.. felt good enough to get a little work done.. I got the header back up and sprayed in some fireblock (o rangestuff) and some draft stop (other stuff).. Also reconnected the wire I had to cut that ran just over the ZC fireplace. I put in enough extra wire to run it up over the ceiling. Since connections have to be accessible I ordered sconces to put on the side walls inside the alcove. Next step is to drop a plumb line from the roof to check where 'straight down' is from my chimney cap hole.. check pipe clearances, and stove clearance from wall.. and order the appropriate length of pipe for the offset I need (I think I need 8" offset, but going to quadruple check). Also need to frame out the side walls to be square to the header framing.

Unless there is another close by outlet you might want to put a duplex receptacle there. It's handy for plugging in a shop vac for hearth cleanup.

Thanks, there are outlets about 3' to either side of the alcove.

Passed the electrical and framing inspections without a snag.. Dazzled him enough with my knowledge of distance to combustibles, flooring, chimney, etc that he said he doesn't need to come back till I'm done.. So on to the tiling (I could have done that before the electrical inspection but was working other things).

Here's my thoughts on my tile pattern. Going out at lunch to get the tiles and then check with dryfitting to see if it will work. Laid down the hardi backer last night..

Just curious, what are your clearances from the class a to the framing?

I never actually measured it, but I'd say about 7" once it comes out of the ceiling support into the chimney chase.. The reason I never measured is because I'm using ICC Excel and it has 2" clearance to combustibles, which I knew I was WELL over. When the Class A is inside the ceiling support, it can be closer.. From the instructions:

"The clearance between the chimney and combustible material must not be less than 2" except for areas protected by the support."
