hi all, awesome site!

we've been burning wood for some time and just picked up this little gem on craigslist. i've never restored a cast iron stove before and am interested in any pointers you guys might have.

we've gone over it with a wire brush and i have some oven black spray paint in the shop from another project, would that work on this stove if we eventually fire it up?

You guys can help too, i'm guessing this was a demo model some salesman carried around in their panel truck back in the day, but it seems to have been a working model. any ideas?

oh, and i'm wondering about fabricating a vent pipe for this thing...anybody ever fool around with anything 4"? I don't know if six inch pipe is going to draft well.

It is not a sample stove, it is a coal stove. Does it have the grates in the bottom of the stove? Not much use for wood in that stove. I would just use it on the deck on cool nights IMHO. Where is the top?

I have the grate and the tops...it's all in excellent shape except for the holes in the very bottom, which I'm replacing on Monday.

It's going in a one room hunting shack in the woods...300 sq ft or so...

Yes they are real coal burning stove. They have a grate in the bottom and a top with 2 round removable lids that you use a tool to lift the lids off. The top has a kinda like a x pattern in the middle with a lip for the lids to set down in so there are flush with the surface of the top. We called them Monkey Stove back in 50's' The will put out as much heat as a wood burning stove on coal no good for wood burning. Are's was vented into a 6''x8'' chimney with a 4 inch pipe black. It worked real good and put out the heat. You can even cook on them or boil up some thing. Neet little stoves. The one we had stood about 2 - 3 feet tall. Long time to remember.. You might want to check the web for some pitchers and parts .

You should be able to find a ton of bit pretty cheap in your neck of the woods. I think the last ton I got in southern IL was around $75, but I had to go get it. good luck

Welcome to the site! That's a neat little stove, as for the 4" you should be able to fab something up for that. DO NOT USE GALVANIZED, go with stainless or heavy guage black pipe. Keep us posted on your project...

yeah it was on craigslist for about an hour....

the missus and i are heading up to lowes tonight to look at replacement fasteners for the ash tray and some pipe. i'm looking at the vent flange on top and dont really see a good way to seal the pipe to the top...am i going to have to fab something up or are there adapters out there somewhere? the opening is about 7" by 3"....

scott, do you have pictures of that maple sap evaporator on here? this feb. is the first time we're gonna cook syrup in the woods and i'm still trying to find the right vessel to put it in.

and yes, we have a coal retailer nearby...what have you all done with the ash in the past? i was thinking of adding it to the mortar for the stone section of the cabin.......

i work in louisville, and cumberland-elkhorn has a yard there. i don't know if there's anyplace a little closer to madison or not, maybe cincinnati?
