First question is, how red does the insert get when this happens?
That insert is beat up. Like others have said, here’s what needs to happen next.
1. Get the insert inspected by a pro, as well as the chimney
2a. If the insert is damaged, will need to be replaced
2b. If the insert isn’t damaged, order new tubes
No matter what, get in the habit of setting a timer on a phone so you don’t forget about it.
Done right you won’t need to be cleaning it out like that. Get seasoned wood. Black on the glass indicates wet wood.
The tubes do kind of support the baffle above but they’re connected to an air supply. Under normal operation and even just slightly over firing the unit, they can turn red but not sag at all.
