Be careful about pushing your stoves too hard in this weather

That is why I would never have a wood burning device inside my home. I know its convenient and you get some of the residual heat from it, but being able to sleep at night and not worry about my wife and kids when I'm working is worth the little extra time and effort it takes to walk 50 feet to my "stove shack". My insurance is cheaper also because its not indoors. Sure hope those folks had adequate insurance.

No more dangerous than a gas burning device,or an oil burning device,or a coal burning device.or even electric heat. All of these can be the source of a fire if improperly installed or improperly operated.
About the only kind of heat known to man with zero risk is "body heat"

Jeez even smoking causes more fire than wood stoves,but id have to admit there probably are way way more homes with smokers in than wood stoves in.
There should be a chart showing wood stove fires broken down into categories like properly installed and operated stoves vs ?

I think the evidence would clearly show that wood burning devices are much more likely to cause a fire than an oil or gas furnace. I've never heard of a chimney fire from oil or gas furnaces, and combustables are much more at risk of starting a fire if left too close to a woodburner than an oil/gas furnace.

I always thought was a good idea to get all heating appliances OUT of the living envelope for maximum safety. I have a coal boiler as well as a wood stove. While these things are very cost effective and produce tremendous heat ,they have taken more than a few lives due to coal gas/venting issues. Always thought an insulated but seperate garage would be the perfect place for hydronic heating equipment to take advantage of the residual heat coming off the appliance.
Plus any malfunction/problem would likely only affect your car.

Honestly I'm more worried about people who have never burned wood before hooking something up real quick to beat the cold & the propane or oil guy. Or someone resurrecting an old wood burner without a full inspection & verification of the burner & the chimney it's hooked to. Seems to be a lot of posts & threads lately, that just kind of make me shudder when I read them. Not just on this board.
