my neighbor has a box store pellet stove he installed himself utilizing his old metal-bestos chimney he had a wood stove hooked up to previously. This morning while he was at work, I noticed a huge amount of smoke billowing from the chimney.....enough to call 911. But after a few minutes, it subsided and eventually stopped and I canceled the 911 call. I called him, and he said he forgot to fill the hopper before he left, and that it shut down automatically , according to him, it being one of its safety features. I never owned one, but this seems odd, and was wondering if it's normal? It was like when you throw a bucket of water on a campfire. Thanks......

What colour was the smoke?

There may have been some pellets in the burn pot
when the combustion blower shut down and they
may have smoldered causing the smoke The fan
would have shut down when the exhaust temp
fell below the proof of fire switch setting, which
is normally 140 Deg.
