Yes elm is ok. It just has to be well seasoned. It could be something else. I'm pretty sure it's not ash.
 
Elm burns nice when well seasoned.

sure looks like exactly the same stuff you guys told me was ash a few weeks ago when i had an ID question. Same orange tint and same stringiness.
 
Anytime Sassafras is mentioned on this site, the experts always say "you'll smell it right away if it's sass." So, does it smell unique like root beer?
 
def not ash. i am certain its gum or hickory, but leaning heavilty toward hick. i hate both woods BTW.
