I have a brick fireplace in a house we recently moved into. There is an ash bin in the floor (about 10" x 10") that has a grate covering it. The slots in the grate are wide so when we have a fire going the embers fall right through the grate into the ash bin. While this is great for cleaning the ash once the fire is out, the fire doesn't last as long and doesn't stay as hot as it could because there are not embers on the floor. In the past, I've had an ash bin in the floor but it had a door cover similar to this, cover. But our bin is a large square and I haven't found a similar cover i can use.

What options do I have to cover while we are burning a fire? I was thinking a small piece of sheet metal, but i am not sure what type would be appropriate, if at all.

thank you.

Just let the ash bin fill up with Ash. Many people don't use their ash bin, just shovel out the ashes and you don't have to worry about air leaks from it

Have you considered an insert, or free standing stove?
