No, hence my reply saying it wasn't worth it to switch out with the warranty if I have to pay a licensed plumber to come in and remove it, take it back to Lowes, then bring one back and install it.
Exactly. That pretty much eats into your savings the HPHW provides.

Now it has switched from ECC to HPO error. HP is still dead, just a different error now when I try to restart it.

I can hear it clicking and trying stuff when I reboot it and it's going through its startup process, but then it just defaults to resistive heat and throws up the error.

See if you can get into the diagnostic mode and check the readings of the temperature sensors. These are cheap thermistors that can easily go bad. On mine (Rheem) I had an evap sensor go bad that was causing the coil to ice up. If you are getting the HPO error it could be the ambient sensor or the tank sensor has gone bad. Maybe while you were away the ambient temp in your space went up just enough that it "thinks" it's back in operation range even with the bad sensor.

Youtube has videos on replacing the temperature sensors, it's a pretty easy process as long as you can get access.

Interesting, the WH is in our garage and it has been hot lately. Will check into that, thanks.
