I've been diligent about getting to the air control earlier. When the secondaries subside I knock the skeletal remains down and pile towards the front. Keeping a small clearing in front of those inlet holes. Usually the split at the back of the box is still somewhat solid. I stack that on top of my pile and open to half or 3/4 air. The temps rise up some and the coals burn down. I might shuffle the pile around to get the bigger remaining coals toward the front again as needed. Has been allowing me to reload quicker.
