Anyone Burning Yet?

I'm thinking about trying out my new to me 10 year old insert in a couple of days when it drops from 85 to 62. At night it's mid 40s. I have to figure out if the cat's even good. If not, thats a few weeks to wait for shipping. I also need to cure the paint in the firebox I painted black, since the side shroud parts were cut to fit previous owners fireplace. Gonna leave the windows open for that. So yea, not necessarily for heat, but to make sure everything is OK, including my new liner I just installed.

Been running mini splits for a few weeks now. Tonight is supposed to be down to freezing lvl (0 C)

Yup . . . for about a week or so now . . . most days . . . I think I skipped one day or two. Just morning and/or evening fires to take the chill out of the house. Using quite a bit of pine along with some chunks and uglies.

Yes the yard is very smooth now and also compacted, when I made the driveway wider last year I had to excavate about 6 yards of soil /clay / rock, I spread it out in the front making it wider and smoother and making a nice gentle grade, now its like an interstate, wide and smooth, still I had to be very careful, no jerking the hydro pedal and kept it in low power, I foresee some bucket pallet forks coming my way in the very near future.

I'll post the pics later but tonight I'm going to build my own bucket plat form for wood hauling using 2x4's, 3/4" plywood and ratchet straps

The bottom red lines are 2x4's the grey is the top sheet of plywood then the yellow is the top 2x4's, gonna wedge the bucket between them, then use ratchet straps on the sides to hold it in place, should work for now, not a permanent solution

49ºF this morning. we didn't need a fire, but wanted to burn out the 10+ lbs. of pistachio nut shells that had accumulated in the stove over the summer so that I can clean the flue. Lit a top down fire on the shells with 4 smallish splits. Stove top got to about 450º, living room 72º. The cat is in front of the stove on his rug, happy to see the return of the sun in an indoor box. Based on the forcast it looks like in another couple weeks we'll be burning.

We used to have two stoves in the house and yes, we would fire up the Jotul first for evening chill chasing. Now the Jotul is in the greenhouse and only gets lit when weather is very cold. The T6 handles the house very well now that we have tightened up a leaky entry and other spots. There are several folks on hearth.com that have two stoves for heating. They often will fire up just one stove until it gets winter cold.

Begreen - do not be dismayed at your brown lawn. Between the rains and the month of overtime being worked, my front yard is a nice thick green jungle. Now the question, since you have two stoves would you fire up the Jotul 602 first, since it is cooler but not colder weather at this time? I have never met anyone with two or more stoves for their home.

House layout, age, insulation play a huge part in 1 stove or two. For me, it's layout, followed by insulation (working on that one !!)

Started the PE Wednesday night when I came home, sick as a dog

I work too hard to be cold ..... ran it Thursday on low simmer. Just started it up to ward off the dampness..... gonna be damp here for a while, me thinx !

Coming along pretty good, used thru bolts to make a sandwich, strap to keep the platform from sliding out, now onto the sides, Gona make them 48" high, decided not to make a back shield because there's no good mounting area will post more pics when it's done

Soon. Low 60s during the day here and upper 40s at night it's only a matter of time before the SO asks me to light one. It's getting to the point where it's noticeably cold in the fringe areas in the house (above the garage, etc).

For now, it's sweatshirts.

Temps here have been in the low 50s at night to mid 60s days. It's been cloudy and raining and the house has stayed between 65-68F with no heat. I try to hold off on the heat until mid October.

You may be ok to just stack east-west as is. I personally wouldn't add side shields because I see that open platform as being useful for many other chores!

What do you burn, eucalyptus wood?

It's not quite Summer yet, it's only 3 weeks into Spring and this morning it was snowing on top of Kalkite Mtn. 1546 metres, (5072ft) The sun is out now, but it is still grey over the ranges, the fire will be on again tonight! Yes, Eucalypt wood is just about all I burn apart from thee odd bit of Wattle (Acacia), but there is a variety of Eucalypts to choose from, some not as good as others. Acacia burns really hot and is great for getting things started.

I started it up on Saturday when it was 37* F outside. I opened 4 windows and 2 doors and a slider and started a mild burn. The room maintained 74*F even though I was using 2 room fans to remove the smell. The odor wasn't bad.

I have been burning pretty regularly when the temps fall. So far, we are happy with the purchase and very satisfied with the heat and burntime produced
