Any way to test a stove's performance in the summer outside?

I have a VC Defiant 1910 that I saved from a remodel in southern Georgia. I don't think it has been used much but I have no history of it.. The vents and damper look like they are working. The gaskets seem good. The catalyst looks fine and catalyst box is intact with all the parts in place. But before I put it in my pickup and drive it to Wisconsin to give to a friend is there a way to insure it will work? I hate to drive it 1000 miles north, install it in his house and then find out next fall it does not work. Any ideas?

A stove on a short test chimney in the summer is going to underperform. It's a bit of a challenge to test when outside temps are warm because of reduced draft. If the stove can be hooked up to a proper chimney of sufficient height and tested on a cool night, then it may get hot enough to ignite the cat. Otherwise, can the stove be safely stored until fall?

How familiar is this person with wood burning for heat? Is there a safe and proper flue system to connect to? Does he have sufficient, split, stacked and fully seasoned firewood already? If not, the stove may perform poorly, even if all is in order.

My friend has lots of experience with non catalytic stoves as do I but the catalytic feature has me worried. I have cleaned, painted it, and changed all the gaskets but will leave it to him to test it next fall. I have some info on how to fire it up I can leave with him. Thanks.

Cat stoves perform and will work well with good seasoned wood. That stove should work fine if its in proper condition, with a good drafting chimney. Lots of "ifs" involved, but it should work out for him but I see your point of driving it that distance only to disappoint... all you can do is try it out to really see. Good luck.
