Too hot????

Hello all...Just installed a Quadra fire 4300 flat top about two weeks ago and love it. Have learned soo much from everyone on this site. Last night I loaded up for an overnight burn with about 6-8 4-5" pieces of one year seasoned mixed hardwoods. I set the primary damper just off the bottom marker and activated my ACC. When i came back to check on it ten minutes later it was in what I believe to be my first "overfire" situation. I could smell the metal and my "inferno" stove-top thermometer was reading almost 850 deg(which I have placed centered about 4 inches in front of my pipe). I immediately deactivated the ACC and completely closed the primary. I kept an eye on the stove and got it cooled down to the 600's in about 15 min. My question is... how bad was this for my stove? No damage seemed to happen but I didn't know how bad getting it to those kind of temps were? Is there anything else I did or didn't do that I should or shouldn't have done?

It shouldnt hurt that stove if it's a one time short duration event. I've run stoves at 800+ for days on end before. Not a great idea, granted, but just an example. Did you load that wood on a large thick bed of hot coals?

With my 2 year old hardwood, a strong draft, and a good bed of coals, my stovetop zips up to 850+ at 50% primary air and no ACC at all ! ...so now I am trying things out at 25% - 35% primary air......

Ya I had atleast a 2" glowing bed going, maybe should have waited a while before the reload but wanted to hit the hay.

You only load for an overnight fire on an established bed of coals. Although you don't come out and say so that's what I figure since you used the ACC. Other than that I would bet the stove is OK...engineers plan for such things happening.

A mechanism that adds front air supply ..it's on an automatic timer ....used for starting fires...
