And from what I read on this forum Drolet is a good stove company too. I am reluctant at this point in paying $900 more for a PE Super 27 but i am still negotiating with the PE dealer to get a better price

EDIT: Yup, 2008 manual has floor protection requirements. The 2012 replacement says ember protection only. Thanks for catching that tekguy.

That is not in my manual, I have seen people post it needs r1 and others say ember protection only, my manual is this year with no r-rating.. Labeled drolet ng1800 wood stoves on cover
Is there a Northern Tool in Pittsburgh? They've been known to sell the Drolet at a similar price, although not at the moment.

Here's a good view of the PE baffle. I believe the Myriad also uses a stainless baffle, but I don't know if the design is as easy to service as the PE is.
It does sound like ~2 cu ft is probably the appropriate stove size for your home, except that you are trying to heat the upstairs from the basement, which gets into the "movning the heat" topic. It may turn out that a 3-cu-ft stove turning the basement into a sauna is what it takes to keep the upstairs comfortable, which is fine. . .unless you spend much time in the basement.

The 81 needs some love, looks like a slammer but this is a serious heater! The 74 looks newer and all you need for both are legs. I think this is around 150 bux. For 500 for the 81, I give it some love and have a really solid heater...just sayin!

After talking to my Wife over dinner we decided on the Drolet Austral. And the journey begins on a new adventure
I would agree. With my slightly-better-than-marginal wood, terrible chimney and insulation, I can cook the wife out of the 650ft^2 stove room with 3 splits.
Assuming you don't sleep in the basement, you could load it up, roast out the downstairs, heat the upstairs, and still have coals left to restart in the morning. And then make a small fire in a big stove during the day.

I just did a little research and Home depot for any of you guys wanting a NC-30 can get a little better deal.
Call customer service ask if they will ship it to the store for free to match Lowes and Menards shipto store free.
I was told shipping for HD is only $99 for my area which is the Midwest. Not too bad.
They told me if I were to order it over the phone they could give me $50 off the $899 price to help with $99 shipping.

Lowes is selling the stove for around $1100 but with free ship to store option. They will not match HD price as the two stoves have different part numbers.
If you call them they ask to match HD price they will give you %10 off over the phone but still not as good of deal as HD.

I have decided to cancel my order for the Drolet Myriad from Menards and to go another route.
Now I am debating between the SUper 27 and the NC30
No contest, get the Englander 30NC. If you want an inexpensive 3 cu ft stove that is well built, this is a good choice. Call around to your local Lowes, Menards and Home Depots for the best clearance price. This stove is also sold under the Summer's Heat and TimberRidge brand names. They are all the same stove, with just slightly different cosmetic trim.

I just bought an Austral on the menards website, just waiting for its shipping arrival. Can't beat $682 for a 3.1 box.

I just got of the phone with the distribution center of Home Depot I can get the stove for $809 plus $99 for shipping. Should I take the deal or should I go with the Dorlet Austral for $649.00

if I had to guess and if I believe everything people write (and i dont have any reason not too), I would think the 30 puts out a little more heat than the austral (or its siblings)
until the guy writes up his first hand comparison review of the two who knows, i havent seen anyone else with first hand running knowledge of both.. maybe their are some here who could chime in

The 30 does have many more users here. . .HD selling it for $650 in years past probably has something to do with that + I think it has been in production longer than the Austral.
Both are big steel boxes with secondary burn. Both have representatives on the forum who provide good support.
I dunno how much difference there really is. . .probably not the 40% difference of $908 vs. $649. Then again, you would have to drive 5 hours to get the Drolet, and spend probably $75 on gas, so it's more like 25% difference.AFAICS, the main difference is that the Austral uses a stainless baffle with holes in it for secondary air. The 30 uses a ceramic fiberboard baffle above several stainless tubes which bring in the secondary air, like ~90% of modern stoves. The ceramic fiberboard is somewhat delicate, and many users have cracked their ceramic baffle by carelessly loading wood. However, it's easy to install a new piece, and it's reasonably priced on e-bay. The stainless steel baffle is more durable mechanically, but perhaps not thermally; it may eventually sag or warp. I would want to know how easy it is to replace, before counting it as an advantage.
Another difference is that the Austral has a bypass for the secondary baffle, which gives the firebox unrestricted access to the flue for better draft on startup/reload. Some, like Mr. Green, will tell you that if you have an appropriate chimney for a particular stove, it will always have enough draft, thereby eliminating the need for a bypass. My stove has a bypass because it's catalytic, but I would want a bypass on a non-cat stove too. Some Drolets + some Lopis + maybe a few others are the only non-cats that use a bypass. Every user comment I've read said that they like having the bypass. You can start a fire on a 60°+ afternoon if you want to, with no draft problems. I dunno if the same could be said for a stove without a bypass on the same chimney. There are plenty of threads about poor draft on startup, smoke spillage on reload, etc. If your stove has a bypass, and the chimney is taller than 10 ft, it's not likely that you will have that kind of problem. Soo. . .personally I would choose the Austral, but I would double check on the ease of removing the stainless baffle.
Good assessment ddden. All good points for the Austral. The OP's draft is not great so the bypass would be an advantage for startup and reloads. Disadvantage, one more thing to forget if you are the forgetful sort.

My Austral is waiting at the store for me to pick it up. Sweet considering i ordered it monday. I thought the bypass was a nice feature, not fond of having smoke spill out the door when i open it. I also liked the stainless baffle over the englanders, i dont have to worry about it getting damaged tossing wood in and the price was a couple hundred cheaper than the NC 30. I just hope i didnt buy to much stove for my house, hoping it burns well on partial loads if need be. The only thing im not crazy about it the looks of the stove, to square and boxy looking for my tastes but i suppose i'll get used to it.
