The holes where if you have the fans on (I do not currently) it would push air out across the top of the CAT into the room. Sometimes I can smell it directly above the stove as well. I mean there are only so many places that smell can come from. If I run it on full HIGH for a few days straight do you think it would suck that creosote back out of the gasket? Also off topic but it is pretty easy to hear when the thermostat butterfly plate (if that is the right turn) closes right? I think mine is closing at like 5 o'clock on a cold stove, and maybe 4-4:30 on a hot stove. So I want to make sure to not go that low, which doesn't even seem that low on the dial as it is full open at 6.

Maybe i misunderstood your comment by between 4 and 5 o'clock is to short of the travel to be on low. I have the princess but i think is about the same.
when i have the cat almost at the end of the active scale and stove top temp 650-675 df i can hear the click of the stat going closed at around 1:30 to 2:00 o'clock. That is if the fan are off. If fan are on is lower than that.

Yeah 4 and 5 I can hear the click, or what I think the click is. 5 on cold stove, maybe 4 on hot stove. There is no other noise if you keep turning it to 12 noon (low). My clock face math might be off, but I am SURE the lowest maybe I have ever heard the thing close was over 3 since I installed it. Just to be clear too. I can run the stove on 6 full blast for a full load and it will do no damage (as long as the bypass is closed).

Not sure if a iphone video would hear the noise but I could try and take a video.

Keep in mind, while we are controlling the butterfly valve by turning the t-sat knob, it has a bimetallic coil that throttles the butterfly open and closed independently of the air setting to protect the cat in the stove. You could have the stove on high and the butterfly could be fully closed if its burning hot enough.

I would think it the seal might dry out and stop smoking if you burnt a full load on high until it needed refueling. Maybe it will take more than that IDK, its anyone's guess I suppose, maybe highbeam can give you a better idea.

It becomes a sensitivity issue. Some folks just cannot stand the slightest smell of creo or smoke. I don't expect that it will fully burn off and even if it did, may return with the next load. It's like smelling a dogs butthole. Nomatter how much he licks it, a few hours later it will still smell like a butthole.

Could also be outside air leaking into the house, an actual leak of smoke, sloppy loading, even a single puff of smoke will stink up a tight room for a long time if you're sensitive.

You cannot hurt the stove by operating it on High.

If its in the gasket then replacing might get rid of it. I guess its possible that it will come back the next time he operates the stove low enough for it to build up in the firebox though.

Nice dog.

When mine was doing it, it was strongest just above the door indicating the smell was coming from the door, especially the hinge side. It passed the "dollar bill" test. My venting was near perfect but it had one fatal flaw: it was 8" pipe from the ceiling to the cap so I placed a 6" pipe (single walled) down the center of the 8" and no more smoke smell. It is just a matter of finding out what is preventing your system from getting full draw to prevent smoke smell.

Have you checked for leakage as in #1931 yet?

Highbeam that is my new favorite quote. I will burn it on high and deal. Smoke would be more worrisome than this smell.

Well, on mine going clockwise i hear a click of completely tstat open at 5:00 when 6:00 o'clock is a complete stop. Going counterclockwise to low don't know how far will go but depending the stove temp i can hear the click around those areas mentioned before. when the stove is cruising , let say about 350-400 df i can hear the click at the end of the sticker that will be maybe 12:30 to 1:00 o'clock. something like that. let see a

Honestly, my princess with a fresh and tight door gasket sometimes smells like creo on the hinge side when I put my nose right up on it during a burn. I don't smell it when I walk in the house though. There are enough smart people on this forum that have brought up the issue that I don't think it's their imagination. Sometimes it can be minimized to the point of being undetectable sometimes not.

I don't think anybody would classify a BK as an easy breather. You really need a good flue setup.

I think its too subjective and a moot point (without a surface temp reading). You already know its going to depend on if the fans are on/running and what stage of the burn you are in. Its dictated primarily on temperature of the stove. I'm just not sure what the value of this information is. If it means anything, I can run the stove with the t-sat at 6 o'clock with no fans and get the butterfly to shut. The stove top temp is pushing 800F and I can hear a slight whistling noise from the air rushing past the butterfly that nearly or fully closed. The noise might be the butterfly is fully shut and the air is rushing in through the small hole driller in the butterfly.

Well, you see different experience, that what we need. i thought that at 6:00 o'clock is like holding it and it closed but not all the way. just controlling the burn rate. I saw picture that you post and i see your knob pass the 6 o'clock almost like 7 o'clock, maybe that's why? I always hear in this site way before i purchase mine that a knob should stop at 6 o'clock. mime is like that since i got it and i didn't have to calibrate it.

Max stat setting is supposed to be at 6 o'clock position for the princess and king. Probably the rest too. +/- of course, and if your max setting is not consistent then you have a problem to fix.

I agreed with that. but my information has ,if anything, no value. lol. before we decide that there is a problem we need to be sure that everything or at least those little details are working correctly, then we can assume the maybe something else can be happening. that way we can offer valuable information to others in those time they are asking for help and researching to fix an existing issue that is an easy fix.

I don't think there is anything wrong with my t-sat, maybe it goes a little past 6 o'clock but doubt there is anything wrong with the stove. It left the factory like that. I talked with BKVP about the possibility of the s-sat being out of calibration from the factory because initially it seemed I was getting low performance. He said they are simple construction and rarely have any issues with them ever. He also said the stove top temps showed it was operating as expected. I'm sure if we both had the same stove and set them at the same spot on the dial they will operated at different temps. Lots of variable like the fuel and draft could cause a large difference. So much that it might not be of any value to compare each others.

i never said something wrong with you thermostat bu i think that it is out of the calibration that i heard from BK. it should not be a big deal but i do not know why his stove is closing the tstat at those high settings. now, i think that if you turn the thermostat all the way to the stop and some how it is holding the butterfly open and it closed some to avoid over firing but not completely. after all we are asking for high demand. For what I sensed it just closing avoiding a running away stove but not all the way. I am based on mine that looks like tsat and knob are working like it should. It opens at 5:00 o'clock and when it stop rock solid at 6:00 o'clock i feel some tension against the tstat coil, what is leting me know that is resisting and not letting it closed all the way.

but i can't tell you that, that is correct. Maybe i am wrong. We will need more input about it maybe from BKVP

More than likely, your knob was put on wrong from the factory or has slipped a little. If it bothers you, it's an easy fix. Just turn the T-stat up to the stop, loosen the set screw, set knob to 6 O'clock, tighten set screw.

Just remember, for the sake of conversation, your running on Central time while the rest of us are on Mountain time. lol

Roll Tide!

I have two purebred pugs now. their father past away two years ago. He last 15 years and a few months. one of his sons that i have always take a leak and it start walking in the front legs and peeing at the same time.lol crazy. He is black, the mom is black too. but papa TANK(the father was tan) like that one in your picture.

Do the princess stoves have the same smoke smell problem as the ashfords? I need to call my dealer to come out and give my setup a look over, but if they can't find anything wrong it might be time to look at another stove. I reworked the double wall stove pipe so I now have 3 foot of straight up, then a 45, then 1 foot, and another 45 straight up the interior triple wall all the way out. Somewhere around 20 foot of chimney in total. Draft seems great, but after reloads for a couple hours I still have that sick sweet cresote smell. If they can't find anything wrong or identify the problem I am probably going to take a loss and trade or sell it. No sense in it just sitting their looking pretty if I can't burn with it. Good thing propane is cheap this year.
I don't have that problem with my Princess...my pipe is straight up.

My pug is Carlos, he is only 6YO but black. Never had a small dog before. He pees like a dog.

Never thought I would have this problem...to long of burn times...lol Still getting the hang of this stove..absolutely loving it thus far! Got a pic of the cat doing its thing tonight..the oak I am burning right now is well seasoned and very predictable and Iights off immediately.I am going to have to adjust accordingly to get the burn times too conform to my schedule. Now to get the wife trained...lol
