After our 14-year veteran shop dog
Angus ambled off to join his predecessor
Walter in doggie heaven, a lively discussion began between
Tom and Miss Ginny about whether or not to raise another puppy. On the positive side, Tom had grown to rely on the calming influence of a dog
curled up at his feet as a natural stress reliever during the usually-hectic workday. Both Tom and Ginny appreciated the health benefits derived
from brisk walks to the off-leash beach for regular rounds of tennis ball fetch. Over the years, hundreds of friends, neighbors and casual passers-by
had expressed appreciation for Walter and Angus. Customers were delighted to be greeted at the door with canine enthusiasm. Neighboring
shopkeepers looked forward to the daily Cookie Quests.
Also under consideration were the negatives, such as the ongoing deposits of dog hair and paw tracks at home, the store, and both vehicles. And the
hassle involved with finding a dog-sitter whenever travel was on the horizon. And potty training.
Weeks went by, and when the time came for Miss Ginny's annual trip to visit the grandkids in Illinois, no doggy decision had been made. As Tom
dropped Ginny off at the airport, she said; "Now, don't go thinking you'll surprise me with a puppy when I get back. We're still discussing this."
Being a big fan of domestic tranquility, Tom would ordinarily have acceeded to this very reasonable request. But plans had been made. He stopped
at the breeder's to pick up little Truman on the way home from the airport.Needless to say, when Miss Ginny and Truman finally met, a love affair of the first order began. Weeks later, Tom is still waiting for permission to
bring the new shop dog to the shop.
Truman cuddles down with Funky
Monkey, his favorite squeaky toy. | Things We Can Learn From Truman
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
When loved ones come home, always
greet them with enthusiasm. Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp and play daily.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Be loyal. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. When
someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on
attention and let people touch you. On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady
tree. Never pretend to be something you're not. When you're happy, dance around and wag
your entire body. No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and
pout...run right back and make friends. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Accept
praise for a job well done.
