Some dogs are just excellent examples of their breed. These champions display an alert, inquisitive intellect; they are bright-eyed, obedient,
and possessed of a natural grace that attracts admiring attention wherever they go.
Angus is not one of those.
After our old shop dog
Walter retired to doggie heaven, his presence was sorely missed. In an effort to find a replacement, Tom researched various
breeds, looking for a friendly sort who would come to work and greet the customers like old Walt had. When a local breeder advertised a litter of
Golden Retrievers, Tom decided to drive out to have a look. There were three puppies left, all males. Two of them were engaged in an energetic tug of war with an old sock, while the third sprawled on his
back on the lawn, legs akimbo, batting lazily at an overhanging dandelion. When Tom reached over to scratch his fat little belly, he grabbed ahold
of that hand with all four little paws, and wouldn't let go.Needless to say, little Angus went home with Tom that night, and started coming to work soon after. He eventually lost his puppy belly, but hasn't
yet outgrown his unique personality, which might be described as just a wee bit goofy.
Angus strikes a regal pose, while studiously
pondering the possibility that the photographer
might be packing a cookie.
| Things We Can Learn From Angus
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
When loved ones come home, always greet
them with enthusiasm. Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp and play daily.
Eat with
gusto and enthusiasm. Be loyal.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
Allow the
experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. When someone is having a
bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on attention and let people touch
you. On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree.
Never pretend to be something
you're not. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often
you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout...run right back and make friends. Delight
in the simple joy of a long walk.
Accept praise for a job well done.
