Wood, cutting it down, cutting it up and splitting it to let it season and
dry. Storing it in a dry convenient place. As primoridal a task as has
ever been since the dawn of time. Gathering the source of heat, light and
comfort for you and yours before the cold, darkness caresses
with its icy grip.
Sometimes when I finish splitting the wood, I take a few of the real though
pieces off of the pile and bring them inside to light a trial fire early
in the fall. This gives me warmth and a feeling of gratification in knowing
that I am able to control some of the things in life. If that kind of feeling
is not enough for you, let it be known that it is for me. Each stick I
cut, split and stack is one more iota of independence in a time when that
word is little used by most. They tell you how they would rather turn up
the thermostat and not worry about the chain saw and the truck that are
needed to gather fire wood.
I want to live my life my way. I want to control some of the details in
it. Cleaning and sharpening the chain saw, riding in the old truck. Some
of the other things that bring me comfort and a feeling of accomplishment.
If the power goes out, we can still cook and heat the house. A little
extra in life that my own hard work has provided for me. One of the basic
things that does not use electricity, no wires, no circuitry, no frailty,
no unexpected failure at the wrong time. Rather like a good friend in bad
times.
