We have been building firewood totes and filling them. We made 11 so far and filled 9, for a total of 4.5 cord css. Only about 50 cord left to go. The totes hold just shy of a half cord. Any bigger and I would have trouble lifting them with my bobcat. Wet honey locust and ash get pretty heavy.

I also put a cheapo depot spray job on the splitter today after putting “new” tires on it. The tires looked a bit too sporty for a rusty splitter, so I used up a bunch of old partial spray cans. The rims were supposed to be black, but the can of grey primer I grabbed was silver paint…. It looked ok so I left it. I used a chunk of cardboard to reduce overspray, but it didn’t work as well as I hoped it would.

My wife says she likes it, and my son said there isn’t a thing wrong with it, so it gets the green light. I’ll paint the front half when I get the new table and split chute made for it.

Interesting idea to use an electric motor, how many hp and does it run on 120 or 240v?

It used to be gas powered. I got tired of the noise, vibration, maintenance, and cost of fuel. It’s a 3hp 240v motor. I had to run a pump with a lower gpm high pressure stage, and the shift point is at about 500 psi.

I just came in from splitting another half cord. Took about a half hour and I was running out of light as I finished. I now have 12 totes full of wood.

I figured I would need about 150 totes for the wood I have to split, but after filling 12 of them I am second guessing that number. It’s going to be WAY higher. At 12 totes I should be close to 10% of the way through my wood piles, but I have barely made a dent in the first one, and it doesn’t even compare to my big pile. This may take a LOT longer than I expected.

That is a lot of wood! Do you sell or is it all for personal use?

I am trying to get a long term supply built up. I might sell some, but the goal is to have a 20 year supply on hand.

I used to tell my wife that I wanted to have 100 cord. We figured it would take a long time, but I may have done it in about 2 years!

Busy up in Maine this weekend. White oak and lots of pine. The oak died from the caterpillars. Shame, it was a really nice tree. Beautiful heartwood with no sapwood, all straight grain. Hand splits like a dream. Wish I could find it at home..

I just got home from leveling a friend’s sawmill. It was far from being flat. It looked like a rainbow. I took my transit and we got it almost perfect over 30+ ft. He was very happy. Now I have to run my mill and cut up some more 2x4’s and panel boards.

Well, that was a total freak show. We got some boards milled, but we ended up doing some welding on the dog stops, broke a screw off inside a log, broke and fixed the recoil starter, developed a gas leak at the sediment bowl, and broke a blade that ended up with about 20 cracks in it. It was very old so no problem there. We got a small pile milled, but nowhere near what I wanted to get done.
