Hello,

Im building a new house in Romania , and I was planing to put UFH with a heat pump, but seeing everything that go wrong with them, it really make me try to heat with a wood stove + some electric radiators in bathrooms and distant rooms , also for when we are not home.

Is my idea crazy ? House is around 90sqm and will be me , my wife and the dogs.

Should I be trying to use a fan to move the heat around ?

Thanks and sorry if this was discussed before. I attached a photo of the house plan with yellow marking where I wanna put the wood stove

Long story short...

Wood stoves are space heaters. Moving the air around is one of the biggest challenges of heating with wood. Fans on low pushing cool air at floor level from the coolest rooms towards the wood stove is most effective. Less turns will make moving the air easier.

Good stove location (interior centrally located wall). Without knowing design criteria and cabinet locations... I would suggest removing the alcove by the right side bedrooms where both doors are and have the doors go more to the main living area and at the lower left bedroom have the door come out the top wall by the bathroom (if possible to reduce turns for airflow...).

We heat with wood, (2 stoves) we also have high efficiency furnace and heat pump which haven't turned on in months. Some rooms are a bit cooler than others, oh well...

A Mini-Split (air to air heatpump) can be a good addition to heating with a wood stove.

The Mini-Split can move a lot of air, while in fan mode and distribute the warm air from the wood stove in the house.

When the wood stove is not on, the Mini-Split is a more efficient heater than a direct electric radiator.

We heat the house this way: wood stove with a Mini-Split moving the air in fan mode. We have a size 50 internal unit, that can move 17,5m3/min air.

Wood stove size and night time temps should also be one of your considerations.

My home is the same size as yours, but it has a longer, narrow configuration. For 20 yrs,I heated it solely with a Waterford 103 stove because the wood was free and money was tight. Big stove and can take a 30” X 10” log. It had an overnight burn rate of 8 hrs. My area rarely got lower than 30 degrees Fahrenheit at night. The living room was always toasty warm. The bedrooms had a bit of a chill, but not cold.

I admire your pioneer spirit.
