I don't think any of the threads describe my question. I have a stone fireplace made from granite stone. I am told by the previous owner that at one time there was a wood stove used. I want to buy a vermont casting wood stove, place it on the hearth in front of the fireplace and vent it through the chimney. I currently have a wood stove in the opposite side of the house that is vented through the roof which we did ourselves. I don't know where to start with the chimney, do I call a chimney cleaner first and will they know if it can be done. Does a pipe go out from the back of the stove and up the chimney all the way to the top of the chimney? Also there is no cap on the chimney and there is currently an old tv antenna secured to it. Thanks for any info to point me in the right direction.

Yes you will have to get the correct liner up/down your chimney and properly cap it. You should also have a block-off plate installed to keep heat from going up the chimney. I am planning to do the same once I have removed the gas insert that is currently in place. One question on the chimney, have you had it inspected recently to ensure it’s in good condition?
Thank you for the fast replies, I did have it cleaned and inspected years ago but at that time I was not thinking of the wood stove so to reply to that question, it is on the top of my list. Plus i can find out if there is a liner in there already or not. In my previous house we had two stoves and two fireplaces and both were used this way. We did wood and coal in them. I want a vermont casting since I currently have one at the opposite side of the house and really like the stove. Thanks again
Read up on some of the recent reviews/ experiences with new VC stoves, there's some people not happy with them. I would look elsewhere honestly

I have a new VC encore. Set up in a masonry fireplace on my hearth. It looks fantastic. Definitely not the easiest stove to use and I'd probably go elsewhere knowing what I know about this stove now.

Start with the stove's manual for reference. That should have a diagram showing the installation requirements and also the mantel clearance requirements.
This is from the Defiant 1975 manual. It shows a rigid liner after the damper area but it's more typical to run a flex liner all the way to the top of the chimney. There is gets a top cap. A block-off plate in the damper area is strongly advised for this type of installation, especially if this is an exterior wall chimney.

thanks that is basically what i am planning to do. My son reminded me that in my previous house it was a one story
house so both the chimneys were not as high so we did not have to do as much. However my current house is a cape cod
style and multi levels and the "attic" area was turned into the second level with bedrooms and bathroom which comes off
the living room where the fireplace is so the heat will just got upstairs since heat rises. Your setup looks great. My son has a
totally different kind of stove from mine and he likes his, guess it what you get used to but I like the cast stove over the
kind with the bricks and ash tray at the bottom. I have the vigilant, looking for another vigilant or the next size larger. Also my front part of my house where the chimney is located is also all granite stone so once it heats up it holds the heat. I see a lot of all nighter stoves for sale
and used in fire places in my area. Thanks so much for the info and pix.

I have a cape as well and use a box fan to blow the cold air from the kitchen in to the living room with the stove to help move the air
