Hi, My questions are about corner clearance including pad, the size needed due to weird house design and if any have a better suggestion than the ones I mention.
We are getting rid of a gas insert and wanting to put a free standing wood stove into the corner of the exterior wall. It will be back up heat. Room is 15'Wx21'L, with a kitchen dining alcove to the side 12'x8'. The ceiling is sloped to 13' H. There is a cut out in the opposite wall near the ceiling 8'x3.5' below that a piece of wall 3.5' and then below that french doors that open into an entry 6'x15'. There is also a pocket door further down the wall that opens up into the next 15'x27' room which the entry also opens up to. The bedrooms are down a long hallway and I don't figure the heat will pull that way. There are four large insulated 5.9'x7.9' windows and a sliding glass door. I am estimating heating 1000-1300 sq ft in zone 4. With mild winters it could become a zone 3. I have a ceiling fan and will probably put in a second in the other room. (I did not design this house, apparently this was style in late 90's early 2000, our home is 2003).

Our concern is putting the stove into the corner with the pad takes up 1/3 of the wall space, so we would like it to fit as closely as possible into the corner. The dealers I have talked to say pads on most models I looked at need a 62" depth (at least 16+ inches from the corner to the back of the wood stove.) The wood stoves I have been looking at are the Morso 7110, Jotul F 35 and the Kuma Tamarak. Back in 2007 we lived in a different home with a Lopi Endeavor and loved the cooktop and wish I could have that option again, but I think that may be to big for our needs now. Our problem is that they all stick so far out from the wall and take up so much room with the pad. Sorry, I feel like this is confusing to read, but just saying "open floor plan" wouldn't quite describe this layout. We really don't want a smaller than 16" log size. Are there other quality wood stoves available in the PNW that would have tighter clearances I am not aware of?

If close clearances are desired, then more convective less radiant style heaters are the better choice, balanced of course on your looks desire in a stove. Steel stoves with convection shells are typically the least rear/corner clearances needed. In the PNW, I'd be looking at PE, Quadrafire, Lopi steel stoves to see if with Double Wall chimney connector pipe, you can find one to suit your needs. Is wood length or burn time a concern? What will you be doing for a chimney system? It all has to be considered. Good luck and stay warm.
