Wood pile critters

My chocolate lab came in this morning smelling of skunk. She rubbed her face on a few things in the house that needed to be washed.

My fear is a skunk is living under the pallets in my firewood rows. If skunk spray gets on the wood - is it still gonna stink come fall or will it eventually clear? I can't bring skunk smelling wood into the house - could this potentially ruin my wood?

I've heard you can soak a rag in ammonia and throw it under there. The skunk will reap what he's sown and find another area to live.

Skunk scent lasts a long time. If you get some on your firewood, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if you could still smell it when it comes time to burn it.

I'm not big on killing things for the sake of killing things. Skunks are an exception for me. You can assume that every skunk you see has rabies, since the species has an extremely high carrying rate. Couple that with your kids or dog getting sprayed, and they gotta go. I'd set a kill set and be done with it.

I kill stuff so my dog does not get tore up when he gets into a fight with the coons and badgers, skunks are on the kill list also.

This morning - I found out what the story was. My wood pile is safe. The dog is safe.

The dog came in again smelling of skunk. I did a walk around the house and property and found where a bear had killed a skunk and ate it. It carried the carcass up to my back door and garage and ate more of it there. The dog was simply doing what dogs do - rolling in it and getting some of the scent.

I am certain it was the bear - because it tracked some smell up on the front porch to make an attempt on the humming bird feeder.

The last time I saw a bear on the porch - we thought the bear smelled like skunk. Perhaps they like to eat skunk? He must have killed it on monday and let it sit and then came back to eat it last night. The carnage left behind was not there yesterday.

So I had to take a paper towel and pick up all the bits and pieces the bear left behind at my back door. The smell would gag a maggot. Then I took a handled brush and bucket with detergent and washed the area down. I didn't want to put the bag of skunk in the trash - so I hooked the bag to my antenna and took it down the road to the Quick Check and put it in their trash can! A guy in traffic got out of his car and said I left my lunch on the car and went to grab the bag for me - I quickly told him not to touch it - as it was dead skunk parts I was taking to the trash! He looked at me like I was crazy.

Our trash doesn't pick up until Monday - so I couldn't put it in our cans in the garage. The smell was really strong. Sorry quick check.

I thought so too...... I'm a stinker. I'm sure it's in the dumpster by now. People dump all kinds of nasty stuff in the trash at gas stations from their cars ..... what's alittle skunk meat and fur ?

Wow the smell on the wood will be ok by fall. The lab that could be an issue....

Oddly enough I also love the smell of a fresh road killed skunk, which gets extra ewws out of my wife and kids. Although I certainly do not associate that smell with my micro brews or anything else :-O

Both the skunk loving dogs and people seem a little off to me , as for the wood pile we have a bumper crop of chipmunks .

I guess love wasn't the word to describe my tolerance of skunk smell. I should say I can tolerate it better with the association strong smelling beer, I haven't smelled the other stuff I referred to in about 2 decades so I'm mot sure if it still smells skunky but just sayin' Beck's beer to me smells like skunk and that is supposed to be good beer right? I am a coor's light/Heiniken light drinker. Having one now case ya wanted to know. Just got done with the saw for the evening.

You gotta have some respect for that Bear, an animal with a sense of smell many times greater than a blood hound, but it'll happily sit down to a meal of fresh-killed (or days old) skunk.
I gag when I try to wash a sprayed dog.

I found this on my wood pile the other day. It didn't smell much, but did surprise me a bit.
