Just grabbed a nice CL find of this tree... I think its beech but not sure. There was also a nice maple and black birch tree I grabbed as well but the weight differences were crazy! This tree was about 1.5 to 2.5 feet in rounds, huge tree, cut to 16-18 I was struggling to carry it. For the heck of it, tried to throw my axe in a round in an act of exhaustion and it bounced right off... Its a fiskars too... Bark comes off easily. You see the one with the bark still on it and then one with it off... But as you can see, there's still a good layer of bark before the "wood" begins.

That's either Shagbark or Shellbark Hickory. :coolsmile: You got an helluva score. Even where its plentiful,most local BBQ joints & anyone with a commercial smoker will pay $100/pickup load minimum for it.I have 2 loads in the shed right now,will be ready to burn next fall.

Yes, definitely a hickory. I think it is hard to tell Shagbark from Shellbark based on a small section of the tree, but either way it will be great firewood. Beech has grey bark like this, but it is smooth, not shaggy.

Yes, it's Hickory, probably Shellbark. Awesome wood. And you got Maple and Black Birch-it definitely is Christmas time! GREAT SCORE MAN!!

Sweet! Thanks for the quick replies! New to this whole area of wood burning. Got an unused makita 6800 for Xmass and went to CL to find that, black and maple. Sure was. I even rented a Uhaul 12' open trailer because there was so much. Two packed trips and going back on Tuesday for an ash tree and one more black birch!

Got the king of firewoods there for sure. Shagbark by the looks of it, not sure how shellbark differs but it's what I know as shagbark. All that weight will be worth it when it's in your stove next year. This year you'd need an incinerator to burn it.

Black birch too, eh? Talk about a sweet score!

if he is in Mass, then its probably not shellbark, as I think that only occurs further west, but I didn't check a range map - I know we don't have it in western va.

Also, I don't think that looks like shagbark either, as all the shagbark i've ever seen is actually really shaggy, with bark peeling - that still looks fairly tight -but I guess it could be.

Doesn't matter at all as the bottom line is that he got some really good firewood !

Also, to the original poster - for future reference - beech bark is perfectly smooth - its the type of tree that you'll often see where people carve their initials into.

Shagbark & Shellbark the bark is similar,just leaflets/number of them is different.Also they vary in 'shagginess' according to the age/size of the tree & how fast it grows.Nuts are same in shape,just Shellbark are much larger,almost golfball sized,even larger when still in the 4-part husk.If you're lucky to find some (good luck before the squirrels,chipmunks,wild turkeys,etc get them first),their taste is wonderful,some say even better than Black Walnut,a bit milder)

Thanks for all the replies... I was told beech by someone else but now after looking I understand what beech looks like. Been scowering CL for free wood now that I've got a new first chainsaw to rip up! So all in all it was a very nice score, maple, black birch and hickory. And going back for more! There was a 100+ foot shaggy bark looking tree that he wanted gone but the other guy that he gave the ad to grabbed that before I could. Still one more ash and black birch left though!

I feel as though I hit a good score here but that these will be few and far between. What's some other methods for scrounging other than CL? Do you call contractors who are just starting to sell lots and ask them if you can cut some trees down for them? How does everyone else scrounge?

Not to hijack, but when you guys are searching craigslist for free wood or people that need trees cut down, what are you using for your search terms? I keep trying to search "free firewood" and come up with absolutely nothing related to people that have trees they want gone. OR, do you all have "firewood wanted" ads posted on CL? If so, could someone link me to a basic format for their "wanted" ad so I can see how you all are wording it? Feel free to PM to keep this thread on topic.
