I sure am glad you fellas/gals dont get bent out of shape over so many ID threads. I have a field guide but it seems pretty useless unless I have a leaf from the tree! Anyway....I took more pics of the bark but, none of them look like it really does in person.

Black Walnut - easy splitting - medium BTU content - creates a bunch of ash.

I'll burn it if I got it, but don't go out of my way to get it. Makes pretty lumber if you like the deep dark colors.

Edit: I wouldn't let a live one survive in my yard. Darn things will kill other stuff, like apple, or gardens, etc. Not to mention the nuts - Oh boy, mowing around those things is baaad. Vrooom, vrooom, thunk, ZIIING... repeat.

Walnut is nice to cut and split - both are pretty easy. Nice straight logs can be valuable, but there are tons of crooked walnuts with barbed wire grown into the wood around here, so they aren't good for much besides firewood. Or nuts, it you have a way to crack them and take out the meat, and you don't mind hands stained black from the husks.

Seriously, yes, that's black walnut. Lots of dark heartwood on that split, should be slightly better than average BTU wise.

Wood Duck, I'll take all the squirrely black walnut you can find. It's first-rate bowl turning wood, with all of that twisted grain reflecting the light in almost mysterious ways.

Seriously . . . sell the logs and buy Oak or Beech 1 for two.

They say Juglone will kill a horse, but I've never tried it.
