At least, it has zero smell and the bark is not nearly as flaky or orange as I'm used to with sassafras
The leaves, bark, wide growth rings and softness make me think some kind of willow.
Interesting. The willows I know don't have this dark bark. But I have not encountered willow here.

Willow, looks just like the willow we have around here. It burns well enough
