Bark is not flat enough for beech imo.
That leaf does look like a beech leaf tho...

Some hard maple also has dark heart wood (as in not spalting but from the tree itself).

Maple indeed. Sugar? I'm not so sure. Bark looks different. Looks like a hard maple.
I'm guessing rock maple. Been a long time since I've seen some.

I’m not an expert at identifying wood species, but the bark and heartwood looks very similar to the Norway Maple I processed a few weeks ago.

Its more than likely smooth bark hickory aka pignut ..... in my experience in dealin with firewood there have been only a few i can think of off tje top of my head that comes a little close to lookin like yhat theres definitel black/sugar maple, theres black walnut which will be darkerin the middle and more widespread but none the less its most likely pignut hickory oh im also forgettin about sweet n black gum but my guess is still hickory

Now that you mention it, and with a 2nd look at the splits, I'm leaning towards the pignut.

The splits don't look very stringy to me?
I have no experience with hickory, but thought it would look more stringy.
Given my inexperience with hickory I may be wrong...

That’s not pig nut hickory. I have a cord or so of it and the bark looks nothing like that.
You sure about that?

I have young pignut that the bark does not look like that. I have mature pignut that does.

This is the pignut I have.

This is the pignut I am familiar with and have. Bark is very different.

Edit. It’s possible I’ve put my foot in my mouth, but the second batch of photos bark is very different, but the top could be a possible match.

Second edit. I confused the OPs photos with stove liker’s 🤦🏻‍♂️. It very well could be pignut hickory

Leaves would be the deciding factor.

If it makes you feel better, my post where I took a second look was the same reason as yours. I had though hard maple.
I had doubled back looking at all photos before commenting on maple. LOL

The other forum (also) converged on hickory.

Think sugar. Taste it!
