wood id - did I get hosed?

So I purchased about 3 cord of wood last winter. it was all covered in snow. it was all cut and split the guy said it was season but it was not so I had to wait for this is year. Anyway it was supposed to be ash maple and oak.I think most of it if actually pine?!

Super light. Burned up pretty quick..

What do you think?

That looks like oak to me. Not sure with just a picture but the bark favors oak. Oak shouldn't burn real fast and it should make good amount of coals.

The split ways very little. Goes up quick and leaves coals.

Split one open, and cut the end off, so we can see fresh wood.

Split it open and see if it smells like pine. The frayed fibers in the end cuts look like it to me. The bark doesn't look so much like it.

It will be very light if it is seasoned well.

That piece is pine, probably one of the yellow pines.

Is the rest of the wood like that piece?

Yeah I'm with Lee, some kinda popple. That stinks if you paid good money for it. Burns like cardboard with no coals to speak of.

Do you have an Aldi's near you? Go get all their cardboard boxes. They have more btu's than that 'oak'.

It does not have any noticeable oder. Cottonwood is some sort of poplar, correct?

Around here they call that Bam Tree, short for Balm of Gilead, a form of Black Poplar. When it gets real big, the centre becomes punky and burns like tissue paper.

Bark looks an awful lot like mature chestnut oak, but with I wouldn't imagine it being light weight even good and dry.

Not so sure. Bark resembles that of some red pines. Wood looks homogeneous too (can't readily distinguish sapwood from heartwood.)

Maybe, if OP would give us a better view inside a piece. SPLIT ONE, eh.

Looks like red oak, or some variety of oak. It's abundant around here. Not to start an argument but our red pines have more of a red, shiny chipping bark and popular etc is far and few between. Our popular is the vertical weed tree and wood is like willow.
