Our house was built with a wood burning fireplace. It has a gas line in it now but we aren't sure if this was put in originally as a gas starter or added later as a gas only fireplace. The previous owners only used gas. That'd be fine but the gas shuts off within 10 minutes of turning it on when we try to use it. Can we use this gas line as a starter or would we need to remove the line to use as wood burning again?

What is the preference, to be able to use it as a gas fireplace that doesn't turn off after 10 minutes, or to use it exclusively with wood?

Then the log burner should come out, the gas line capped, and valved off or disconnected before fireplace unless a gas log lighter is desired.
