white powdery sustance

We have a fire place that we have not used in the eight years we have had out home. We have had the chimney cleaned even though we have not used the fire place as mentioned. We have two wood logs in the fireplace that sit in a iron holder for lack of a better word. we are seeing this white powdery substance. Can anyone tell me what this is. Thanks
