A sweep came this afternoon, I lit a fire after he'd left and 10 mins later this dropped into the grate. Is it a baffle. Can I put it back easily? The sweep lives 80 miles away, I don't want to call him back for something I can easily do myself.

What stove do you have? It will help us figure out the part easier.
 
Looks like a basic baffle. It can be put back in place as long as the supporting brackets or rails are still in place.
