South jersey.
so I found a wood stove on CL for 100 and based upon what I have read here this looks like a great model.
It is a Vermont Castings defiant. Probably 80's model. Out side of the rust it seems like it is in really great shape.
I know that it is a large stove, it will be going in my basement.
Im not too concerned with looks, so Im not planning on painting it.
The stove is replacing another one so I already have the pipe and area all set up for it.

My question is what should I do to help get this stove ready for winter?

I am already planning on replacing the gage seal around the edges of the doors.

I have herd much talk on here about fire brick, does this stove need any?

there are three trays in the bottom of the stove where the wood lies, is this just for air circulation or does somthing go here?

any other advice to add to what I need?

thanks guys

I keep getting the message that the pictures are too big! Ugh
I reduced them down to the smallest size. I think I have to retake the pictures with another camera

You are also limited to the number of pics you can post at one time . . . try posting just one or two of the smaller sized photos.

The Vermont Castings Defiant doesn't use firebrick. The "trays" at the bottom I'm guessing are the ash grate. The wood sits on top and ashes fall through to the ash tray. Most common problem with the Defiant (there are many versions and parts differ) is a cracked fireback, the cast iron piece that's the back of the interior of the stove. Many of the parts for the older Defiants are not available anymore. The model number of the stove would be a big help. Should be on a tag on the back of the stove.

Hard to see from the picture, is the area above the corners of the door arch smooth or dimpled?

I was referring to the surface face of the stove. I am wondering if this is a VC stove or a Taiwan knockoff. It's hard to tell from the pics.

Question?. Does a new stove install in South Jersey have to be EPA compliant? This may help, if any more effort on stove ID is required.
Good luck
