Yuuup, that's what I use. A couple wraps or so, then hold it place with a few strips of masking tape and slide it in. I kinda make some rolls and put on the sides to stuff and seal any gaps, I'd say it expands 2x so plan for that.

Looks like standard interam gasket. I got a roll of it last time, since I service multiple stoves. I got it pretty cheap, trying to remember where..

The gasket is pretty much a joke on FPX fireplaces. One wrap it’s sloppy and does almost nothing, 2 wraps it won’t go in the hole typically. Especially if the cat has any distortion. Packing the ends with ceramic wool to keep it from walking out is typically what I wind up doing.

But the interam gasket expands; so if it's sloppy when installing it might be fine after a first burn?

That's a engineering design quality issue.

Though if double wrapped gasket doesn't fit, and you can put your finger in between - then either the finger or the gasket thickness is not what I am used to ...

I was referring more to the ends of the cat. They stuff that area with ceramic wool to fill the voids. The cat does not fit tight though from the factory. That tells me it’s not all that important considering it’s one of the most efficient fireplaces on the market. The gasket on the insert is a tighter fit much like other brands.
