I read a lot of posts where folks talk about raking the coals to the front and the ashes to the back. What do you use for this? If you bought the tool, can you remember where and about how much you paid? Thanks.

I had my local hearth shop order a rake, not sure what I paid at this moment but it was worth it.

Fireplace shovel- turn it upside down. It has worked fine for me thus far. Standard firplace/woodstove places will have an actual little rake if you'd like.

+1

ash rake that Fossel gave me :)

I just use a little 3-tined hand rake that I bought for $5 or so at our local hardware store. Works great! It's pictured below in the photo laying next to my Fiskars hatchet.

My all-purpose tool, homemade a long time ago when I was a teenager:

I made myself a combination ash hoe and coal rake. I hoe the ashes and rake the coals, not the other way around. It's my fav tool. Before that, I used the backside of the shovel to shove everything to the back and then used a corner of the shovel to pick the coals out and bring them forward.

I got the idea here on this site--a child's leaf rake. Found one locally for I think $6. Works like a charm.

These are all great ideas, and just what I was looking for...thanks!

I'm all about doing things cheap and easy . . . and for that reason I do the same as Adios Pantalones . . . just flip my shovel upside down and move things around a bit.

Dan- I use an ash hoe to push everything to the back and then bring the coals forward toward the door/air inlet. I got mine from a blacksmith in MI named Richard Heinicke, www.ranvilh.com. He made and sent the hoe and didn't want to be paid until I was satisfied--nice guy, and easy to deal with. Think I paid $15, and he also made me some other nice hearth tools.

I will second the little kids garden leaf rake, 6 or 7 tines, metal, short handle, about the same size as my other fireplace tools.
