A lot of you guys say a freestanding stove in the fireplace is better than an insert. What’s the difference between a convection stove that sits 2/3rds in the fireplace as opposed to a non-flush insert?
 
Sometimes, not much at all. It depends on the stove or insert design. With a block-off plate installed sometimes an insert can perform about as well, particularly if the surround is left off. And sometimes even better if the stove has no blower option.
 
Yea I meant to mention “without the surround” in my question. But yea seems to be the same to me. Although I like the look of a freestander better as long as the proportions are right
