Hello, I have a Vermont Vigilant stove labeled 1977. My question is does this stove require Fire Brick? I have tried to find answers even in the manual but don't see anything about Fire Brick. I have read to put play sand on the bottom and am wondering if that's all I need. Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

No firebricks, the Defiant uses cast iron plates inside for heat shielding. 1977 is the casting mold date. The Defiant had a few iterations between 1975 and 1980, with the same mold date. Scroll down on this page to see the parts and the different firebacks that distinguish the versions.

Yes, sand or a 1" layer of ash is recommended on the bottom. The manual for the original VC stoves is posted here, in 3 parts.
