I have a Vermont Castings 2550 Encore, bought in 2010.
I found that the refractory has a moon-shaped hole in it at the top. With tearing the stove all apart, I was able to get a look at the refractory and and looks like it is intact.
My son repairs industrial furnaces for a living, and said that they have what is likely a similar material at work, and he can get it for me, cut, for free.
It looks like if I patch the top piece (which is about 4" wide and 12" long), that would work as a band-aid for now. Vermont Castings seems to attach the pieces of the refractory with sheetrock screws, which surprises me, but I can easily patch a replacement piece under the missing refractory piece if it is cut to size with a few screws.
Does anyone know what material the refractory is made from, and what material could substitute for it?
