Hello All,
I have recently purchased a used Vermont Castings 2190 wood stove. My Preamble: I have never owned or operated a wood stove. We recently purchased a vacation home in New Hampshire, and as there was a wood stove in the house at one point we wanted to put it back for when we were there on the weekends. At time of purchase I was made aware that I might need a CAT, so I took apart the unit and after researching the web I found the CAT to be completely intact and should get some more life out of it. However although the Fireback and Damper assembly look good with no warping or cracks, well to my eyes anyway, the Refractory basically crumbled as soon as the Fireback was removed. I just ordered a new Refractory and it should be here within 3 to 4 days. So on to my question, in order to change out the “Refractory” do I need to remove the Damper assembly? To access it from the front or remove the back of the stove to access it from the rear? I assume removing the back will create other problems such as possible air leaks and such. I did find a thread with almost my exact question (in 2005) however no one answered the question. The owner’s manual goes into detail as to how to inspect and change out the CAT but stops short there, and I have tried searching Youtube and other web searches but have come up empty.
I would appreciate any input and or advice.
Thanks
Kevin
