Hello All --Longtime lurker, first time poster. Thanks in advance for all of your knowledge shared. Hubs completely rebuilt a 1986 VC Defiant Encore. Beautiful (and expensive) job but we loved the stove and believe in resurrecting good old things rather than buy new from China...anywho...stove fired up great and was humming along as if brand new (replaced Cat, refractory, thermometer coil, all gaskets) -fireback and all panels were in good shape with no cracks or warping.

All was going great until damper handle seemed to just break free and now swivels without connection to the damper assembly.

Before I ask hubs to open up the stove anyone have any idea what might have happened and is there an easy fix? Manual says you can reach damper tabs and torsion bar clips via the flue collar...really hoping this could potentially be the issue rather than ripping the entire assembly apart again. Ugh...help!

possible the damper actuator and rod detached.

Thank you -- that's what my husband said as well -- any easy way to fix it rather than open up the inside? I'm hoping he won't have to rip the stove apart to fix since he's currently busy renovating an entire house. He presumed exactly that b/c he said when he was rebuilding it he said it looked so easy to come undone. Murphy's law!

not sure if that is a c-clip seen in the picture. you'll probably have to remove the damper, working through the griddle or flue collar. flashlight and flash camera are helpful.

Start by removing the cover plate on the left interior side. This will reveal the two items shown in the pic.s, damper rod and "hockey stick.". You' likely be able to see what went wrong. If the hockey stick has fallen down between the inner and outer sides, don't waste time fishing it out, just get another one.

good to see you back defiant3. haven't seen you in a bit.
